Scouting Report (3/9/2020) Deontae Lawson is an athletic, active linebacker that is tall, lean and high-cut. Although he needs to work to add more bulk to his frame, he is explosive and plays like he is 25-pounds heavier. He was highly productive last season for Mobile Christian is an athletic, active linebacker who amassed 144 tackles, including seven tackles for a loss, seven sacks, and three interceptions.

Against the run, he fills inside with a good base and shows great power and strength when taking on pulling linemen and fullbacks at the point of attack. Lawson consistently forces blockers upright and ball carriers inside. He’s a rare athlete who can slip blockers with good lateral quickness or shed using his strong hand technique. He possesses very good pursuit-speed and can close quickly, He can cover a lot of ground and makes a ton of stops up field in opposing backfield.

Against the pass, Lawson has improved his hand usage and strength as a pass rusher from his sophomore season. A ton of upside as a standup rusher given his length, strength and quickness. I would like to see more film in pass coverage but he does show the ability to drop and get depth and will close quickly.

Deontae is elite against the run and should continue to grow in the other areas of his game. There are no red flags in his game, he just time to continue to develop his body in a college strength and conditioning program.
